Well, couldn't resist and glad i didn't, this truck is a blast!! most fun i have had in quite a while.

First off, i picked mine up for $160 shipped - not a bad deal from Tower. For that $160, i got a truck that's very well equipped - full turnbuckles, bearings, brushless ready tranny, and the waterproof electronics are just a fantastic idea. The chassis itself is a nice size, longer than a stampede but otherwise very similiar however with the full-size body on top this is a BIG truck. i'd put it at at least 1/9 scale, maybe larger.

Drive-time! i put 6 packs through it and had a blast. The suspension is very soft out of the box, and you have to drive it with care not to roll it on pavement as it has a ton of chassis roll, but on dirt this thing just floats along. Jumps of scale size are just soaked up, but i heard the rear slap occaisionally. Under acceleration, it squats heavily in the back like a full-size CORR truck and going around turns, it leans way over - it looks like it is going faster than it really is. The 12t motor does ok, but i think i have been spoiled by brushless as i was looking for more power - but for the base suspension settings, it was a good balance overall.

Where i thought this truck shined the most was tail-out drifts in the dirt - the rear end steers nearly as much as the front, and you can hang the tail out and drift sideways all day long. With the front wheels tilted and turned and the rear hunked down and shooting out rooster tails, this truck looks very, very scale. It's not hard to get it staightened out either, it handles very well overall and with the heavy body roll, you can always tell what the truck is doing. By the 2'nd pack, i was easily pitching it around and having it completely sideways, then pulling out of it perfectly- the truck made me look like a pro.

and it gets attention, i had quite a crowd watching the drift session around the bases at a local ballfield. Pretty sure one of the guys was going to go buy one as soon as he left.

all in all - awesome truck - traxxas nailed this one in my opinion.

After 25+ years of racing and bashing and most recently rock crawling, this truck has got to be the most fun that I have had on my backyard track and at the local skatepark.I have had it for 2 weeks and it has been run everyday with several batteries each day, mine now has a 5700Mamba Max/Lipo combo which made it alot faster but either stock or brushless it is the most fun I have ever had with any RTR!My kids fight for it all the time and they both have vxl Rustlers!I guess it helps that we are huge desert racing and corr fans.

Did yours come with the headlight decals already on or did yours come with the blackout ones like mine did, I guess some are coming either way. And the Traxxas decal on the side was too low to put the number stickers underneath like how they show it so I moved the stickers around a bit. I lowered the Traxxas sticker to the rocker panel and put a number on the right part of the door. Yea I am loving mine and all its doing is sitting there pretty waiting for payday so I can run to the LHS and pick up some battery connectors fo rmy charger/batteries or new batteries all together and going out and getting dirty. Have fun!

in the pics mine is stock except i removed the large Traxxas stickers from the hood and the sides. i love those paint jobs, think it looks just fine without all the decals.

mine did come with the headlights...odd.

i have a mamba 5700 combo waiting to go in, or i might just rob the velineon from my 'Rustit' to keep it all in the family. i am waiting for the next rainy day first though, i want to go play in the mud!

stuck with no connectors! ouch, that's almost torture! i converted almost all mine over to Traxxas now, they are actually pretty good connectors and very easy to install. I had a heck of a time trying to solder Deans - i like these much better. Got a few more ESC's and 2 chargers to go - it's a pain in the rear, but worth it in the end.

OldSchoolRC

oh, it's in and the rear tires are paying for it. you have to be very careful though, i didn't change the shocks at all and they are still very soft. high speeds + soft suspension - rollover city. i can only use the full power in a straight line, but it's a lot of fun as you really have to drive it to keep it on all 4 tires. And if you catch it right, it pulls the front wheels in the air - very cool!

OldSchool what brushless system did u use the MM or the stlen velion? Also what battire or Lipo did u use.

OldSchoolRC

running a Velineon and 7.4 lipo. Think it's an orion, not sure offhand. Really makes a difference though.

Do u kow what shocks are on it? Like off the bandit, rusty, pede, or are they new type traxxas shocks?

OldSchoolRC
08-11-2008, 06:21 PM
I do know, I've seen them up close. Same old Traxxas shocks, exact same as the Stampede/Rustler as far as i can tell. If going with a faster motor, they really need some thicker oil.

Hey old school, Have you ran this truck on a gravel surface yet? I am thinking of selling off most of my rc stuff, and maybe adding an e-revo, and the slash may make it to the stable if I can get a good report on a rough gravel surface. Working in the oil field, you do not get much time to bash your stuff, or to get to a LHS. I am only home for a few days at a time, an my RC's are begging for attention I cannot give them. But, I can use a e-revo at the jobsites. A Slash may be the ticket though.

well, sort of. next door is a parking lot of finer gravel. i don't know what size you would be running on, but i think this thing could go over a field of 4's as long as it was somewhat flat. it's pretty big and has good ground clearance. I really like it and highly recommend it.

strapped in the 5700 mamba and lipo - way too fast without some suspension changes. i rolled the truck i don't know how many times, but i was having way too much fun to stop :)

i think it would be farely good at your job site they are farily big and handle well off road, the chassie is alot longer then my pede and the truck is a nice bit different all around besides the suspesion, i would reccomend a stiffer shock oil tho.

Big bore shocks. I have some coming. I'm also the one doing the Slash Project. Any input is always welcome:)

the stock shock oil is a bit light, especially in the back. works ok for the stock drivetrain, it pretty much floats over everything and lets the back of the truck hunker down under aceleration like a full size CORR truck - very cool. Add faster speed though and it becomes a bit hairy - especially in turns. I'd like to bump the back up a bit, but i cannot find what the stock oil is. usually Traxxas is pretty good with listing that stuff - anyone have any idea?

awesome - thanks for the tip.

on a side note, i had the slash out for a party here last night and was showing it off to some friends. After i passed out however, they fired it up and drove it around the backyard till the battery died....unfortunately, i had my lipo in there. :( I'm not sure if i am going to be able to save it.
