RC RACER TURNS PRO IMPORT DRAG CAR DRIVER                   Page 2              back to page 1
STEPHAN
PAPADAKIS by Greg Vogel

GREG - Do you have any memorable races?

STEPH - I qualified for the A-Mains in the Westerns in like 90…or 89 maybe: it was pretty cool. I also attended a national. But for the most part I stuck with club level events, not too many specialty races.

GREG - Someone said you own a HPI Savage now. Is that true?

STEPH - I have no idea what that is. I do have a Mini-T though, a Losi Mini-T. I got it when it came out. It was a blast! We drove it around the shop for a while, but it took up too much of my time so I had to park it. It still runs and all, but if I were to run it, I know it would take up too much of my time again. I also have an HPI 4WD Nitro RS4MT Truck, but every time I run it, I break it. I hit things pretty hard in the parking lot. Usually I break front arms: I think I went through five or six arms so far.

GREG - What did you think about the RC Drift Expo?

STEPH - It’s cool. I don’t know what these guys normally run, but they’re good.

GREG - You got some time with one of the RC Drift cars; were you into it?

STEPH - Oh, totally, I’m into the competition, though. The single runs are cool, but I’m into the competition part where a bunch of us run together.

Inside Steph’s AEM Pro Drag Civic is pretty impressive. Import drag racing has come a long way from unibody cars to tube frame chassis cars. Steph played a big role in helping to grow the sport. To think it all started with the love of RC cars!

GREG - So you really seem to like the competitive side of RC, from your experience as a racer and even recently at the Drift Expo. Did your past RC experience act as a gateway to full-scale racing?

STEPH - That is exactly what happened. I was really into the competition and found that I could fix up real cars and not only race them, but also drive in the car: Not just control them with a remote.

GREG - Very cool. Steph, thanks for your time! It’s great to hear the RC car hobby helped you determine your future. This is an inspirational story for people who might be considering following in parallel footsteps.

STEPH - No problem.
