The amount of time and money required to completely alter the looks of a RTR off-road vehicle is not as much as you might think. Here we are demonstrating 3 full-blown RTR truck appearance changes using Pro-Line gear as examples of what is possible. Simply selecting one of the many bodies offered by Pro-Line along with wheel and tires is all that it takes. The end result will be a great-looking vehicle that is unique to you and will not end up looking like your run-of-the-mill RTR truck. We are using the Arrma Kraton 6S 1/8-scale monster truck, the Axial SCX10 II Deadbolt 1/10-scale rock crawler and the Losi Tenacity TT Pro 1/10-scale trophy truck to illustrate what can be achieved.
ARRMA KRATON 6S
About the Arrma Kraton 6S
The Arrma Kraton 6S has made a name for itself as being a very popular basher with its incredible speed paired with Arrma’s legendary toughness. Over the years it has undergone some updates and shown here is version six which takes its epic speed and strength to the next level by adding key upgrades. Many of the chassis components have been beefed up for added toughness along with new side guards and a two-piece brace that runs from tower to tower. Powering this beast is a Spektrum Firma 150A Smart V2 ESC paired with a Firma 2050Kv brushless motor to allow this monster to hit 65+ mph speeds. Topping the Kraton 6S chassis is a new multi-color factory finished body that is available in two different versions and have convenient, quick-release, clipless body retention system.
Pro-Line 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD clear body—#PRO359200
The new Arrma Kraton 6S comes with cool looking new factory painted bodies on its futuristic molded body. If you are more of a scale guy, consider the Pro-Line 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD clear body. This is an officially licensed GM body that has great scale looks with a sharp modern design and is made to fit the Arrma Kraton 6S. This body can handle the abuse that a truck like the Kraton 6S will face thanks to Pro-Line’s use of durable polycarbonate material. Since this body comes molded crystal clear, you have to opportunity to lay down your own created paint scheme. Included in the package are window mask and a detailed decal sheet and like nearly all of Pro-Line’s bodies, the body is protected with paint-then-peel overspray film.
Pro-Line Street Fighter HP Belted Monster Truck Tires, Mounted—#PRO1016710
When you own a super-powerful monster truck that is powered by a 6S brushless motor system like the Arrma Kraton 6S, you are going to perform a load of high-speed passes up and down the street. In order to better dial-in the on-road handling of a truck like the Kraton 6S, we suggest swapping out the stock wheels and tires for these pre-mounted Pro-Line Street Fighter HP Belted Monster Truck Tires. The Street Fighter tires are designed with Pro-Line’s own technology where they molded a high-performance herringbone weave patter belt inside of the tires that will prevent the tire from ballooning or expanding during use. The key benefit of the belt is way more control when the truck is traveling at high speeds. Additionally the aggressive tread grooves with soft M2 compound provide excellent grip. As mounted tires, the Street Fighter comes glued to Pro-Line Raid 3.8-inch wheels. The Pro-Line Raid 3.8” Removable Hex Wheel allows you to replace a damaged wheel hex without needing to replace an entire glued tire. A unique interlocking hex design is bolted into the wheel using eight M3 screws. If the wheel hex becomes damaged, just unscrew the M3 screws and install a new wheel hex.
AXIAL SCX10 II DEADBOLT
About the Axial SCX10 II Deadbolt
The next of the 3 full-blown RTR truck appearance changes using Pro-Line gear is the Axial SCX10 II Deadbolt 1/10-scale rock crawler which is based on the ultra-popular and ultra-versatile SCX10 II chassis. Along with being highly capable out on the trails and easily upgradeable, the Deadbolt is a budget friendly RTR truck. It is built around high-strength steel C-channel chassis and fitted with contoured skid plate. The included LCX AX10 tranny uses all metal gears, a heavy-duty slipper and accepts a wide range of gearing options. Axial placed the adjustable servo mount on the chassis frame allowing a wide range of servos to be used. Found at the front and rear are Axial’s AR44 solid axles designed to give more ground clearance thanks to the location of the pinion gear. They also feature metal dogbones and helical cut internal gears that are all supported by ball bearings. Keeping the Deadbolt in control over obstacles and challenging terrain are oil-filled, threaded body shocks that can be tuned and mounting positions can be easily swapped.
Pro-Line 1946 Dodge Power Wagon black body—#PRO349918
Replacing the body on the Axial SCX10 II Deadbolt to this Pro-Line 1946 Dodge Power Wagon black body will be quite a drastic change. We love the scale looks of the Power Wagon body in which Pro-Line expertly incorporated many details and captured the killer old school styling of the real 1946 Dodge. It is modeled after the first generation Power Wagon complete with its iconic front end. Including the huge flat panel style fender flares, large round headlight buckets and aggressive looking flat front grill. (The round headlight buckets allow you to install LED’s.) Other details include textured rocker panels with realistic undercuts. Pro-Line designed the Power Wagon body in two pieces—one for the cab and one for the bed. This allows you to build the Power Wagon as a complete truck or leave off the bed so you can install a custom bed. Unlike the other bodies we selected in this article, this one is made from completely black polycarbonate Tough-Color material. This means you can make this conversion even quicker since you don’t have to paint the body and you won’t have to worry about paint peeling or chipping off.
Pro-Line Hyrax G8 1.9” crawler tires, mounted—#PRO1012813
Now, the Axial SCX10 II Deadbolt comes with a very good tire and wheel package, but we are looking to make a visual change in the looks of this off-road RTR while being sure to maintain its off-road prowess. This is why we went with the proven Pro-Line Hyrax G8 1.9” crawler tires. To make this change easier, these tires come out of the package already mounted on the tough-looking Pro-Line Impulse Back/Silver internal bead-loc wheels. These wheels have a great scale look and are made to be easy to use by only requiring six screws per wheel to securely mount the Hyrax tires. A unique three-piece wheel design bolts together from the rear and locks onto the tires. Pro-Line fabricated the Hyrax tires for maximum grip on the harshest of terrain and come molded in Pro-Line’s legendary G8 material. Pro-Line gave these tires an aggressive and open tread pattern with each tread block containing multiple sipes for awesome tread flex. They even went so far to make sure side-hilling would be improved by highly detailed connected tread on the sidewall. If you look closely, you will see stepped tread blocks for more forward gripping edges. This will give the Deadbolt the advantage where these tread blocks will dig into slick rock.
LOSI TENACITY TT PRO
About the Losi Tenacity TT Pro
Trophy trucks, which are quite similar to short course trucks, are so much fun to drive and race like the Tenacity TT Pro. Based on the legendary Losi TEN platform, the Tenacity uses a rigid 4mm aluminum plate with independent front and rear suspension, adjustable turnbuckles, swaybars, aluminum shock towers, threaded body oil-filled shocks, three robust metal gear differentials and a shaft-driven 4WD drivetrain. The muscle that makes this short course a serious threat at the track is a Spektrum Firma 4-pole 3150Kv 550 brushless motor with a Spektrum Smart 130A brushless ESC, a system that can easily handle either 2S or 3S LiPo battery packs. Getting the power to the ground is a set of officially licensed Falken Wildpeak MT tires that are wrapped around Method wheels. The Tenacity TT Pro is available in two flavors: the officially licensed Brenthel trophy truck body or the Falken tires body.
Pro-Line 1978 Chevy C-10 Race Truck clear body—#PRO351000
It is no secret that we at RC Driver love running trophy trucks like the Losi Tenacity TT Pro. Inherent in their design, the suspension soaks up rough terrain with ease as the wheels cycle up and down in the wheel wells of the body. For this RTR truck appearance change, we kept the trophy truck theme and added a cool old school desert race truck vibe. To this end we chose the sweet-looking 1978 Chevy C-10 race truck body. It has the classic step-side, old school body style with big race fenders and squared off cab and bed. This is exactly the type of truck you would see tearing across the desert back in the late 70’s. In order to complete the look of the C-10, Pro-Line provided a nice set of stickers that accurately recreates the front grill and headlights and includes some period looking sponsor logos as well. This body comes clear so you can make it your own with a custom paint job.
Pro-Line Mirage TT tires, mounted—#PRO1024811
Swapping out the stock wheels and tires that come on the Losi Tenacity TT Pro is not as much about changing the look of this rig and is more about boosting performance. Like the Street Fighter tires we selected for the Arrma Kraton 6S, the Mirage TT tires are belted to handle extreme power and high speeds with ease. The Mirage tires were inspired by full-size trophy truck tires which give them a super scale look. Pro-Line made sure to make them lightweight and durable enough to handle considerable punishment. Then to provide as much grip as possible, the Mirage tires are molded in the legendary M2 compound which works at the track, road and/or any place you plan to bash this truck. At the center of the tire are the Pro-Line Raid wheels featuring removable hex for ultimate versatility. Included with the mounted Mirage tires are 12mm and 14mm hexes making them possible to install them on all types of trucks like the Tenacity TT Pro.
