This month’s Backyard may be a little more serious than usual but I wanted to share how I was able to use our hobby for something more than just fun. It really doesn’t take much to convince me to go play with my toy trucks. This past July, however, I had an opportunity to not only play but to support and help bring attention to the Nathan Chris Baker Foundation here in Eldersburg, Maryland.

Several Months ago, I introduced you to Bryan Davies of Port Deposit, MD and his Dash 4 Cash quarter races. Since then, Bryan has taken an interest in scale and trail trucks so he immediately began developing plans for a new event to offer the RC addicts in the area.

RC rock racing, Southern Rock Racing, or Ultra 4 racing has been around for about four years, regardless of what you call it; the popularity of the sport continues to grow. The courses make the toughest short course tracks look like a Sunday drive with grandma.

Just a few years ago, I never would have thought it would be possible for someone to have something in their own home that could actually print out an item and do it affordably. I only thought big corporations with endless cash flow could purchase such a machine. But now I have a 3D printer on my desk at work and one at home in my workshop.

One year ago I introduced you to Adam Munds here in the Backyard page and shared with you his passion for the RC hobby and how he used that passion to organize RC Fest. This one-day event was created to promote the hobby and more importantly, educate people on the importance of blood donation.

Well, I hate to be the barer of bad news, but the RC hobby and industry isn’t just birthday parties with pony rides. Sure, the vast majority of my editorials focus on the positive things we encounter in the RC world and values I’d like to instill to our valued readers so you get the best experience possible for the hobby you love.

I Have always felt that if an RC vehicle has an open or highly visible driver’s seat that it should have a driver figure in it. If that driver could look like a mini me then that would be over the top. However, I never considered that since I didn’t know it was actually possible.

I was just made aware of the projects that Danny builds. I don’t know how I wasn’t aware sooner. I found him and his “blow your mind” creations on Facebook and now his is one of the first pages I check out each day just to see what he is up to.
