Cool indeed! Home Built Project by Michael Leonhard

img_5144

We here at RC Driver get many, many emails and messages about new cars, parts and more.  We take a good look at everything for consideration and recently we were sent a cool home built on road car from reader Michael Leonhard.  Check out the pictures he sent us and some of his explanation below –

“The creative process started with drawings – designing every component piece per piece. Starting with the double deck chassis, power pod and bumpers. Further to the front set up and drive-train.
The layout of the 2WD chassis is quite old school incorporating high grade materials such as Aluminium, FRP (Fiber-reinforced plastic) and POM (high-spec plastic). It has a front/rear split chassis, Aluminum/POM front cross members, and stainless steel knuckle arms for extra strength. And it is equipped with a disc brake. Many of the core parts have holes for weight reduction.
Lightweight sponge tires are mounted on wheels made from aluminium.
The chassis concept is designed to take up a 0.21 glow engine.

I am quite a fan of 80s sports cars and the Vector W2 was one of my favorites. So it was an easy decision to combine the chassis with a Vector W2 body in 1/8 scale. I hired a company to create a 3D model and make a mold. When the mold was finished and approved I let vac form a handful of bodies from polycarbonate. The rear wing is made from aluminium like on the original Vector W2 model. Decals were created for detailing and to make it look close to the real thing.

The model is about 503 mm long and 255mm wide and has a height of 118 mm. Weight (full equipped): 2300 g.

What you see on the photos is the first prototype finished. And in this form is almost ready for production.
You may ask if this model will be available in kit form. But this is something I need to figure out still.”

Got a cool home built project?  Let us know and it may end up here!
