3 Upgrade Ideas Thursday – Dromida Monster Truck 4WD RTR

You don’t always have to spend big to have a blast in RC. Dromida has constantly been putting out quality vehicles for any budget which tend to be great starter vehicles. While Dromida has a line of high performance brushless cars, I wanted to focus on the affordable brushed range. And everyone likes monster trucks, so let’s start with that one. The Dromida Monster Truck is an RTR package that comes with everything you need for under $100. With the low cost of entry you may have some money left over for upgrades, and I know just the place to start.

1. Dromida Brushed Upgrade Kit
While my usual course of action is to spring for a brushless setup in my brushed cars, sometimes it is hard to justify the price tag. This is especially true with the Dromida 1/18 MT, as the brushless kit offered costs more than the original vehicle. So I think a better initial option is to go for the brushed upgrade kit that Dromida offers. This is a direct plug and play setup that contains a 22 turn brushed motor, pinion for either the MT or Buggy/SC, and a heatsink. This all plays nicely with the stock electronics and should give your Dromida a little pep compared to the stock system. Having this all in one package is a huge bonus for beginner’s as well, sometimes getting gearing correct can be a daunting task.

2. Dromida Drive Train Aluminum Upgrade Kit
Now that we are pushing some extra power through the monster truck, let’s upgrade the drive line to make sure that our durability does not suffer. In keeping with the same trend as the brushed upgrade kit, Dromida has you covered in offering an all-inclusive package. Many of the pieces of the plastic drive train are now replaced by aluminum which include all four dogbones, axles, and the center drive shaft. There also is a aluminum spur gear, so you never have to worry about stripping one ever again. I am a sucker for aluminum parts, and I have these parts on my own Dromida and can attest that they look fantastic. But more important than looks is the fact that they offer increased durability and less maintenance over the stock bits. Also, it is hard to believe that all these alloy parts are offered at only $24.99!

3. Duratrax Onyx 110

The Dromida RTRs now all come with USB chargers, but sometimes it just isn’t practical to assume there will always be a port around for use. Furthermore, some USB ports do not offer high enough power to charge the battery as fast as it can handle. This is where an aftermarket charger comes into play. The Duratrax Onyx 110 has an included AC power supply, so you do not need to find an USB port, just a typical wall outlet. The peak detection charger can charge at rates of 1A, 2A, and 4A so the charger can grow with the user if they decide to step it up to bigger NiMH cells for other vehicles (it can handle up to eight cells NiMH). It is super easy to use as well, just plug it in and select your charge current (1A works well for the stock Dromida battery) and the auto-start and stop circuitry takes over. An easy to read LED system makes it simple to see whether the battery is charging or completed. Having one of these chargers around is certainly handy.

All three parts I listed come at a market price of $24.99, making each ultra affordable when budgets allow. If you have to start with one, I would totally go for the charger, having a proper peak detection charger will pay off in the long run, especially if you decide to get more packs down the line. These chargers are always great to have around and it’s small footprint makes it very portable. Hopefully these upgrade give your Dromida Monster Truck a little pep, and each upgrade will work on any 1/18 scale brushed Dromida. We are excited to see what Dromida is up to, keep an eye out for their new FPV lineup of vehicles!
