Duratrax Body Scissors and Reamer Set

Review: Duratrax Body Scissors and Reamer Set

As you can about imagine, we have quite a few RC rides here in the RC Driver office; everything from on-road cars monster trucks to short course and even a few drift cars. They are all cool in their own way, but the one common denominator with all of them is simple; they all have cool bodies. If you have the right tools, the time it takes to paint, detail, cut and mount a body can be cut in half and, in some cases, even be kind of fun. To help make the job easier, Duratrax has released their new 3-piece Body Scissors and Reamer kit. This kit comes with a set of curved scissors, a set of straight scissors and a body reamer.

THE GOODS
Included in this 3-piece kit is a set of curved and straight scissors. Both of them are made from stainless steel, are extremely sharp and have molded plastic fingerguards for holding. The reamer, I must say, is one of the best I’ve ever used. While it does come with a very sharp, fluted tip, the best part is the oversized rubber handle. It’s very comfortable and has “flats” molded into it to keep it from rolling off your table (your toes will be happy to hear this).

THE WORKS
To test out all three pieces, I grabbed a painted on-road body I had sitting in the office for a future project. I started off by using the curved scissors to cut out all four wheel wells. The Lexan didn’t stand much of a chance against the super-sharp blades so once I completed that task, I moved on to the side panels. You can use the curved scissors for this purpose (and actually I prefer them), but once I gave the straight ones a shot it did seem a bit easier as all I had to do was cut … I didn’t have to maintain the correct “angle” of my cut as you do with curved scissors. After I was satisfied with my cuts, I switched over to the reamer to poke holes for the body mount and the wing. Again, the Lexan was like butter as the uber-sharp reamer just drilled right through it. The handle makes this tool amazing, but you have to be careful as it does allow alot more leverage and can quickly make a hole to big (no, that didn’t happen to me … as far as you know).

Wrap Up
Scissor and body reamers are overly abundant in our industry, so other than the fact that they are sharp, why should you buy them? I have three reasons: 1) yes, they are sharp and, having used the scissors previously, stay sharp for quite some time. 2) They are also “sharp,” as in good looking. The reamer itself has a cool-looking handle that is comfy in your hand. Finally, 3) the entire set retails for $12. That’s a steal and not just for two pair of scissors, but a cool reamer. Go get yourself a DTXR1160 and make body prepping a much simpler task.
