Driving an RC car that closely replicates the looks of the full size vehicle it is modeled after only ups the cool factor. The aftermarket company, Knight Customs is a master at creating highly detailed accessories that are designed for specific vehicles. Each and every vehicle we have seen outfitted with Knight Customs’ parts vastly enhances its appearance and becomes more realistic looking. Unfortunately, only a relatively small number of vehicles have been blessed with these special parts created for them. Being featured here is the most recent recipient…the Tamiya Lancia earns the Knight Customs scale treatment.
Following we will jump into the Knight Customs 3D printed Delta Integrale Detail Parts Set to highlight what comes with these parts, its special features, tips on printing and the build process. Knight Customs designed this set specifically for the Tamiya Lancia Delta Integrale that is based on the Tamiya TT-02 chassis. This set provides the perfect way to upgrade your Lancia Delta Integrale with highly detailed accessories that add more scale detail to Tamiya’s iconic rally car replica. Whether you’re building a showpiece or a functional rally car, this kit offers excellent detail and easy installation.
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
The Knight Customs detail parts kit includes several key components designed to elevate the look and functionality of your Tamiya Lancia Delta Integrale kit:
- Front Skid Plate: Adds protection to the front of the body, especially important for Lexan bodies that are prone to damage during rough terrain driving.
- Grill Parts (2 styles): Two different grill styles are included, allowing you to choose the look that best suits your model. Both grills have mounting points for an optional light pod.
- Light Pod: The light pod is designed to fit the grill and can house 5mm LEDs (sold separately) and uses readily available Axial lens sets.
- Roll Cage: This piece bolts directly to the optional Tamiya rally interior set, providing an authentic and sturdy roll cage setup.
- Turbo Fan Wheel Covers: These bolt directly to the stock Tamiya kit wheels, adding another layer of authenticity to your build.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES:
- Mud Flaps: The set includes mud flaps that are recommended to be printed in flexible TPU filament for added durability and realism.
- STL Files & G-Codes: The download includes both the STL files for custom 3D printing and pre-configured G-code files optimized for PLA filament. These G-codes are provided for both Bambu Lab and Prusa series printers and are a good starting point for those new to 3D printing.
- Installation Instructions: Detailed, step-by-step instructions for installing the grill and light pod are included in the download.
RECOMMENDED PRINTING SETUP
Before you start printing, here are a few things to note:
Printing Material:
While the G-codes are optimized for PLA filament, we recommend using TPU filament for the mud flaps for increased flexibility and durability.
Printer Settings:
The G-codes are designed for the Bambu Lab X1 and Prusa printers, but should work with any printer that has a print bed of 20x20cm or larger, such as the Ender series.
- Layer Height: 0.2mm (for a good balance of detail and speed)
- Infill: 20% is sufficient for most parts, but you can increase this for parts requiring extra strength (e.g., the roll cage).
- Supports: Some parts require supports, which are included in the recommended G-code settings.
- Temperature: Standard PLA settings should work well for most printers (around 200-degrees C for the extruder and 60-degrees C for the heated bed).
STEP-BY-STEP BUILD PROCESS
1. Printing the Parts
Start by printing the various parts included in the kit. The G-codes provided should make this an easy process, but you may need to adjust your printer settings slightly depending on your printer model and the filament you’re using. For the best results:
- Use the provided G-codes for the Prusa or Bambu Lab X1.
- If using PLA filament, ensure that the recommended temperatures are set correctly.
- For TPU (for mud flaps), ensure your printer is capable of handling flexible filaments.
2. Installing the Front Skid Plate
The front skid plate is designed to fit the Tamiya Lancia Delta Integrale body, adding some much-needed protection to the Lexan body. This piece is essential if you’re using your model for off-road rallying.
- Installation: The skid plate mounts to the front of the chassis and requires minimal effort. Simply align the plate with the front of the Lexan body and secure it in place using the included screws.
- Effectiveness: Not only does it protect the body from damage, but it also adds a tough, rally-inspired look.
3. Attaching the Grill and Light Pod
You have the option to choose between two different grill styles. Both grills have a mounting point for the optional light pod, which adds extra realism to the model.
- Grill Installation: First, choose your preferred grill style and mount it on the front of the chassis.
- Light Pod: The light pod is designed to fit onto the grill and can be equipped with 5mm LEDs (sold separately). The lens set is compatible with Axial’s Axial Light Bar Clear Lenses – AX80086, which can be easily sourced.
- Wiring the Lights: If you’re adding LEDs to the light pod, you’ll need to wire them to a dedicated lighting controller.
4. Mounting the Roll Cage
The roll cage is one of the key features that give the Lancia Delta Integrale its authentic rally car appearance. The roll cage bolts directly to the Tamiya rally interior set.
- Bolting the Roll Cage: Install the roll cage by aligning it with the mounting holes in the interior set. The screws included in the kit will hold the cage securely in place.
- Fit and Finish: Once installed, the roll cage not only looks fantastic but also adds structural integrity to the model, enhancing the overall authenticity of the build.
5. Attaching the Turbo Fan Wheel Covers
The turbo fan wheel covers bolt directly to the stock Tamiya kit wheels, giving your model an iconic racing look.
- Wheel Cover Installation: Simply fit the wheel covers over the existing wheels and secure them in place using the provided screws. These covers add a level of detail that makes your build stand out.
6. Adding the Mud Flaps
For extra detail, print the included mud flaps in flexible TPU filament. These are ideal for adding to the rally-style look of your car, and using TPU provides the added benefit of durability, making them perfect for off-road driving.
- Mounting: The mud flaps are easy to install and attach directly to the body or chassis, depending on the configuration of your model.
