THE SET
So rather than picking up a bunch of parts bags and stapling them together, YR neatly packages the bagged components in a box and includes install instructions for each of the parts. Included in the set are HD aluminum wheel hexs, HD servo mounts, HD rear lockouts, HD front C-hub carriers, HD front steering knuckles and front and rear truss/ link mounts. All of the aluminum parts are anodized a cool gunmetal color with some parts featuring the Yeah Racing logo etched into them and any hardware needed to install each of the parts is included too. Now let’s break down the individual parts.
Part: # AXWR-S01
Aluminum Heavy Duty Wraith Upgrade Combo Set
Price: $75.90
The aluminum wheel hexes are machined aluminum rather than cast or composite like other offerings on the market. They are very lightweight with large relief cuts between each hex point. The hexes are retained with set-screws to keep them secured to the axles when you remove the wheels. YR also includes new wheel pins to use in case yours are worn or lost during wheel removal. Now, the thing is, you can’t use these hexes with stock Wraith wheel hubs which are set up to accept the pin directly to the hub. To use these, you’ll need Axial’s IFD Hex Hub Conversion (AX31074) which accepts a 12mm hex.
REAR LOCKOUTS–
The stock rear lockout tubes on the Wraith’s AR60 axle are composite plastic. They work well, but the ends of the axles can be a stress point. These YR aluminum tubes have a nice tight fit over the axle and the bearing sits snug in the tube. As you can see they have nice relief cuts to reduce weight while adding style. This bolt-on is simple and looks great while bumping up durability.
FRONT C-HUB CARRIERS–
These beautifully machined aluminum hubs are a direct fit replacement for the stock hubs. They are right and left specific and can be clocked to change the caster angle. YR includes new flange tubes and screws for the steering knuckle installation. When we installed the knuckles on the carriers and tightened down these “king-pin” screws, it did pinch the knuckle and caused a little bind. To remedy the problem, a healthy dose of threadlock compound was added to the screw and the four screws were snugged into place.
STEERING KNUCKLES–
These are perhaps our favorite part of the set, the well machined gunmetal grey steering knuckles. The machine work around the bearing is cool and matches the machine work on the rear lockouts. The pivot bosses have been opened to lighten them up and there are several steering link mounting options if you use an adjustable drag link. The YR logo is etched on the parts for brand recognition. Nice stuff here!
SERVO MOUNTS–
It’s no secret, the steering on any off-road machine takes a lot of abuse, so why are you continuing to use plastic mounts that can flex under heavy duty use to support your servo? The simple L-bracket style servo mounts from Yeah racing offer excellent support for the servo. New screws come with the kit to mount them to the stock servo plate and new screws with flange washers are supplied to secure the servo.
LINK/ TRUSS–
Last but not least in the kits are front and rear link/ trusses for the top of the axles. These impressive lightweight pieces of aluminum give the axle a cool custom look and bolt on in under ten minutes. The openings in the truss lighten the piece and hardware is supplied to secure the servo plate up front and secure the lower tabs on the truss to the axle.
IN USE
To swap out the stock components for everything in the Yeah Racing Aluminum Heavy Duty Wraith Upgrade Combo Set, you’ll need to set aside about a half an hour on the bench and use standard RC tools to perform the wrench session. For the most part these components simply require you to take off the stock part and install the YR part, except for the new kingpin screws mentioned earlier. If you crank down too hard on the screws, you may pinch the knuckle and cause some steering bind. We used threadlock on the screws and tightened them to a snug feel and have not had a problem since.
Out on the rocks and dirt, we and you probably won’t notice any performance difference other than possibly a more sure footed steering feel now that there is less flex in some of the steering parts like knuckles, carriers and servo mounts. The real benefit of this kit is the components’ strong aluminum structure improving durability and giving you more confidence to attack rough terrain.
WRAP-UP
Yeah Racing’s Wraith components are beautifully machined, fit well and certainly add a lot of style to your off-road rig. If you were to purchase all of these components individually, you’d be spending around $90, but with the combo set, you get a deal at $76. If it’s time to go next- level with your Axial Wraith rig, bumping up the durability and style is easy and cost effective with YR’s combo set; all aluminum goodness in one box!
